GES directs students to stay away from Accra Newtown school after building collapse
The Ghana Education Service has directed students not to report to the Accra Newtown Experimental D/A School following the collapse of part of the school’s structure, which has claimed three lives and left 20 others seriously injured in the Greater Accra Region.
Speaking to Citi News on Monday, March 30, 2026, after a briefing with security officials at the school, the Director-General of GES, Ernest Kofi Davis, said the Service will hold an emergency meeting to determine the next course of action.
He emphasised that students will remain away from the school until safety can be fully guaranteed.
“We are going to work with the regional and national teams, including the estate department, to assess whether the remaining structures are fit for purpose.
If they are not, we will advise students not to access those areas,” Prof. Davis stated.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of school infrastructure, particularly in urban areas, prompting calls for urgent inspections and remedial measures to prevent further tragedies.
Authorities are expected to conduct comprehensive structural assessments of the facility before any decision is made on the resumption of academic activities.
