The government has announced plans to construct 50,000 housing units for teachers as part of efforts to improve the welfare of educators and address accommodation challenges facing the teaching profession.

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu disclosed the initiative, stating that the programme is aimed at providing decent and affordable housing for teachers across the country.

According to the minister, the housing project forms part of broader measures by the government to improve working conditions for teachers and enhance motivation within the education sector.

He noted that access to suitable accommodation remains a major challenge for many teachers, particularly those posted to rural and underserved communities, and that the initiative will help address the issue.

The government believes the project will contribute to teacher retention, especially in areas where inadequate housing has affected the ability of educators to remain in their assigned schools.
