South Dayi Member of Parliament (MP) Rockson Dafeamekpor has expressed confidence that newly appointed Majority Leader James Agalga will eventually become Speaker of Parliament.

Speaking on TV3’s The Key Points programme, Mr Dafeamekpor praised Mr Agalga as a brilliant parliamentarian with a strong grasp of parliamentary procedure and the law.

He said Mr Agalga was among the few MPs whose contributions naturally command attention whenever he rises to speak on the floor.

“There are some people who, when they speak, you just have to listen. And James is one such person. He has a voice that, anytime he’s on his feet on the floor, you are minded to listen to him,” he said.

Mr Dafeamekpor described Mr Agalga as “solid on procedure, solid on the law”, adding that he reasons exceptionally well and communicates effectively.

He said the Majority Caucus valued Mr Agalga’s contribution and guidance in managing its affairs.

“So, we relish working with him and having him provide guidance in terms of how we manage the caucus,” he said.

Mr Dafeamekpor then predicted that Mr Agalga would eventually lead the House as Speaker.

“Everybody is congratulating him. We all know that it’s just a matter of time before he leads the House,” he said.

He further praised Mr Agalga for consistently bringing perspectives to parliamentary debates that others may not have considered.

“I’ve met him in Parliament, and he’s never had a bad day in Parliament. I have never recalled James being on his feet and flustered. He always brings perspectives that you may not have considered before,” he said.

Mr Agalga was appointed Majority Leader after Mahama Ayariga stepped down from the position following his nomination for a Cabinet appointment by President John Mahama.
