President John Dramani Mahama has joined the University of Ghana and Ghanaians in celebrating Christina Koch following her historic participation in Artemis II.

In a statement, the President described Koch’s achievement as a moment of national pride, particularly noting her past as an exchange student at the University of Ghana during the 1999/2000 academic year.

According to him, Koch’s time at Legon went beyond academics, as she immersed herself in Ghanaian culture by studying courses such as the History of Ghana, History of Africa, Rural Sociology, Music, and Twi for Beginners.

President Mahama also commended the astronaut for hoisting the Ghanaian flag during her mission, describing the gesture as deeply symbolic and touching for the nation.

He said Koch’s journey from lecture halls in Accra to the frontiers of space exploration serves as a powerful inspiration to young Ghanaians, demonstrating that local institutions continue to nurture individuals capable of achieving global excellence.

The President further extended his best wishes to Koch and her colleagues on the Artemis II mission, expressing hope that their success would inspire future generations across Ghana, Africa, and the world.

Christina Koch is the only woman on the Artemis II crew, a mission widely regarded as a significant step in global efforts to advance human space exploration.
