NPP condemns arrest of party communicator, alleges political persecution
The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly criticised the arrest and remand of one of its communicators, Baba Amando, describing the development as politically motivated and an abuse of state power.
Addressing a press conference in Accra on April 15, 2026, the party’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, alleged that the actions of law enforcement and the Judiciary in the case point to a growing trend of political intimidation.
According to him, Baba Amando honoured a police invitation in Sunyani on April 13, accompanied by his lawyer, but was subsequently transferred to Accra under what police reportedly described as “orders from above.”
He stated that although the accused was granted police bail and asked to report the following day, he was later arraigned before court and remanded despite the prosecution not opposing bail.
Mr. Boakye further criticised the decision of the Presiding Judge, arguing that the remand order was unjustified and amounted to judicial overreach.
He also referenced the recent arrest of NPP Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye, claiming it forms part of a broader pattern of targeting opposition figures.
The NPP accused the government led by John Dramani Mahama of using state institutions, including the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), to suppress dissenting voices—an allegation the party says raises concerns about free speech and civil liberties.
Among its demands, the NPP called for an immediate review of the remand order, an end to what it described as the politicisation of law enforcement agencies, and an investigation by the Chief Justice into the conduct of the court.
The party maintained that government should focus on addressing pressing national issues, including unemployment, rising cost of living, and infrastructure challenges, rather than engaging in what it termed political persecution.
