Obimpeh demands shake-up in energy sector over power outages
A member of the Council of State, Yaw Owusu Obimpeh, has threatened to lead a massive demonstration against the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, if ongoing power outages persist.
Speaking on the Ghana Ekosen Morning Show on Adehye FM, Mr. Obimpeh called for sweeping changes within the power sector, including the removal of Chief Executive Officers, particularly at the Ghana Grid Company Limited, and the reassignment of some engineers he accused of undermining government efforts.
He alleged that certain individuals within the sector were sabotaging operations, warning that their continued presence could damage the reputation of the government if urgent action is not taken.
Mr. Obimpeh urged President John Dramani Mahama and the Energy Minister to act swiftly to address the situation and safeguard the image of the National Democratic Congress administration amid the recurring power challenges, commonly referred to as “dumsor.”
While acknowledging efforts by the Energy Minister to procure equipment to stabilise power supply, he maintained that the outages persist due to what he described as internal sabotage within the sector.
He further accused elements aligned with the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) of allegedly using infiltrators within the power sector to frustrate government efforts and erode public confidence.
In addition, Mr. Obimpeh criticised the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, over what he described as poor telecommunications service delivery, warning that he could also organise protests against him.
He insisted that decisive action is necessary to prevent setbacks for the government, stressing that he would not stand by while ongoing challenges threaten the performance and public perception of the administration.
