The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) has officially clarified its position on the Publican Artificial Intelligence (AI) System, giving its full support for the initiative following months of stakeholder engagement with government authorities.

In a press statement released on Thursday, the association addressed what it described as “misleading and outdated” claims suggesting that it remains opposed to the AI system currently being implemented at Ghana’s ports. According to the IEAG, such claims stem from a December 18, 2025 media publication that no longer reflects the association’s current stance.

The association explained that its earlier concerns in 2025 were legitimate, citing insufficient stakeholder consultation, as well as issues surrounding data security, transparency, and system integration. At the time, the IEAG, along with other industry players, had called for broader dialogue to ensure the credibility and effectiveness of any technological transition at the ports.

However, the IEAG noted that the Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Finance and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), has since undertaken extensive consultations with stakeholders. These engagements, the statement said, have been constructive and have addressed the key concerns initially raised by industry players.

“As a result of these consultations and the good faith demonstrated by government, the Association wishes to state unequivocally that it supports the Publican AI System, which has since been rolled out,” the statement emphasised.

While acknowledging that the implementation phase has encountered some operational challenges, the IEAG described such issues as typical of major technological and policy reforms. It commended authorities for their continued efforts to resolve these challenges and improve system efficiency, noting that recent stakeholder forums have reinforced confidence in the process.

The association further highlighted the potential benefits of the AI system, including enhanced revenue mobilisation, improved transparency, reduction in revenue leakages, and the minimisation of unethical practices at the ports. It described the initiative as a significant step toward modernising Ghana’s trade facilitation systems and strengthening the country’s economic growth.

The IEAG also cautioned the public against attempts by certain individuals or groups to misrepresent its position for “narrow or parochial interests,” stressing that it will not allow itself to be used as a tool for propaganda.

Reaffirming its commitment to national development, the Association pledged continued support for policies and reforms aimed at improving port efficiency, eliminating bottlenecks, safeguarding national revenue, and promoting a fair and competitive trading environment.

The statement was signed by the Executive Secretary of the IEAG, Samson Asaki Awingobit, who urged all stakeholders to support the successful implementation of the Publican AI System in the national interest.
