AFCON 2025: CAF President defends decision to strip Senegal of title, and declare Morocco winners amid controversy
Dr Patrice Motsepe, President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has defended the governing body’s unprecedented decision to strip Senegal of the AFCON 2025 title, insisting the ruling reflects the independence and fairness of CAF’s institutions.
The decision follows Morocco’s successful appeal against Senegal, overturning the result of the January final. According to CAF, Senegal breached tournament rules when its players staged a 17-minute walk-off after Morocco were awarded a stoppage-time penalty.
As a result, Morocco were declared champions with a 3-0 scoreline, securing their first AFCON title in 50 years.
Motsepe responded to criticism and allegations of corruption or favoritism, emphasizing that CAF treats all member associations equally. “The independence is reflected by the decisions that were taken by the two bodies,” he said.
“The CAF Disciplinary Board took one decision. The CAF Appeals Board took a totally different decision. No single African country will be treated in a manner that is preferential or advantageous or more favorable than any other country on the African continent.”
The CAF Appeals Board ruling came after a January 28, 2026, decision by the Disciplinary Board rejected Morocco’s initial request to be declared champions despite losing the final. Senegal have indicated their intention to appeal the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Motsepe reiterated CAF’s commitment to fairness, equality, and transparency in all matters involving member associations, asserting that the governing body will continue to uphold these principles across African football.
