GFA is in full support of Carlos Queiroz staying as Black Stars Coach, says Asante Twum
The Ghana Football Association's (GFA) Executive Council has unanimously agreed that Carlos Queiroz should continue as coach of the Black Stars, following a review of his performance at the FIFA 2026 World Cup.
GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum revealed this in an interview with Graphic Sports.
He explained that the Executive Council, which is the association's highest decision-making body, had assessed the 73-year-old Portuguese coach's performance and chosen to maintain continuity.
"The council, which is the highest decision-making body, after assessing the performance of Coach Carlos Queiroz, have agreed that the coach is made to stay," Asante Twum said.
Even so, the GFA's endorsement is not the final word on Queiroz's future. Any fresh agreement will still need sign-off from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, which foots the bill for the coach's contract.
"The final decision does not rest on the FA. It must go to the ministry for them to look at the contract and approve because they will pay the salary of the coach," Asante Twum said.
He confirmed that Queiroz has been made aware of the Executive Council's decision, though he could not say how the coach responded.
"I don't know what the offer from the FA is to the coach and the counteroffer he is also proposing," he added.
He underscored that the GFA views Queiroz as part of a longer-term plan for the national team. According to him, the decision to keep the coach was driven mainly by the need for stability in the Black Stars' technical setup, rather than opting for another change so soon.
The GFA also expects Queiroz to benefit from the return of key players Mohammed Kudus, Salisu Mohammed and Alexander Djiku, all of whom missed the World Cup. Their comeback is expected to strengthen the team as Ghana heads into the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Queiroz, 73, was brought in on a four-month contract to replace Otto Addo and led the national team into the World Cup. His future has been under speculation since Ghana was knockout, with reports suggesting his continuation could hinge on outstanding payments allegedly owed to him by government following the tournament.
Asante Twum said he could not confirm whether such a debt exists, noting that he had no insight into Queiroz's financial arrangements with the government.
