'He's Ghana's star': Essien backs Kudus, calls for nationwide support ahead of World Cup
Former Black Stars midfielder Michael Essien has urged Ghanaians to throw their full support behind Mohammed Kudus as the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches.
Kudus, currently with Tottenham Hotspur, has been out of action since January through injury, missing recent friendlies against Austria and Germany. Despite the setback, he remains central to Ghana’s plans after playing a pivotal role in the qualifiers.
Essien believes the midfielder’s influence on the team is undeniable and says he deserves patience and encouragement from fans.
“If I start talking about him [Kudus], we won't finish!” he said with a smile.
“I think he has showcased himself to the football world. He’s one of the biggest talents, and for Ghana, he's our star.
"We have to protect him and give him all the love and confidence he needs,” he added.
Kudus is expected to return ahead of Ghana’s final pre-World Cup friendlies against Mexico and Wales in May and June.
The Black Stars will be making their fifth appearance at the World Cup, where they have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia.
