The University of Ghana Sports Stadium is set to come alive this Wednesday, May 20, as it hosts the first-ever University of Ghana (UG) Invitational Championship-Athletics, a three-day celebration of speed, strength, endurance, and rising university athletic talents from across the country.

Coming right after the African Seniors Athletics Championship, the University of Ghana Sports and Wellness Directorate is looking to keep the athletics spirit alive with what promises to be one of the most exciting tertiary competitions.

The championship runs from Wednesday, 20th May to Friday, May 22, and will feature athletes from seven institutions: University of Ghana (UG), Tamale Technical University, Ho Technical University, Takoradi Technical University, Accra Technical University, Colleges of Education Sports Association (COESA), and Thorne Foundation Sports Academy. Events will take place daily from 2pm to 6pm.

As hosts, the University of Ghana will be counting on some of its standout athletes to deliver outstanding performances on home soil. One athlete to watch is high jumper Daniel Hoinsode Asare, who won gold at both the Cape Coast and Accra editions of the Ghana Athletics Association Championship with a jump of 2.10.

He is expected to face tough competition from Accra Technical University’s Boadi Emmanuel, who recently recorded a 2.0 jump.

In the long jump, UG’s Philip Boateng will also be aiming to make a statement after recording an impressive 7.51m jump to win silver at the Cape Coast Championship.

On the women’s side, Rukaya Sumiala continues to attract attention with her consistent performances. The UG athlete not only holds her school record but has also equalled the GUSA 2.12 record, a major achievement that highlights her quality and consistency.

The middle and long-distance races are also expected to deliver thrilling competition. Reigning 800m champion Moris Bazaa will look to defend his dominance, while David Nakousi, UG’s local 5000m champion, is expected to lead a highly competitive distance team.

In the women’s distance events, Jennifer Anani headlines a strong group after excelling in road races, cross-country competitions, and the 5000m. She will compete alongside Elizabeth Adjei and Vivian Nartey, who both impressed during the Cape Coast and Volta Region Championship. While on the lookout for Takoradi Technical University’s Jane Membong , who won the 1500m race at GHATUSA, attention will also be on COESA’s Veronica Yelimor, who won the 100m, 200m, and 400m at the Ghana Athletics Association Championship in Cape Coast.

Perhaps the biggest track name representing UG is sprinter Mordecai Owusu. Having competed at the African Games and recently represented Ghana at the African Seniors Athletics Championship, Mordecai enters the competition with experience, confidence, and momentum after strong performances in both Cape Coast and Accra earlier this season.

Ghana continues to produce incredible athletic talent and competitions like this provide a platform for these athletes to showcase their abilities, inspire others and elevate tertiary sports.
