Tension escalated at an office of MTN Ghana at Darkuman, near Komkompe in the Greater Accra Region, as hundreds of Mobile Money agents stormed the premises to protest the blocking of their merchant SIM cards.

The aggrieved agents said the demonstration was triggered by what they described as the unexplained deactivation of their SIMs, some of which reportedly contain millions of cedis in funds.

The situation caused widespread frustration, with the agents demanding immediate clarification and resolution from the company.

One of the affected agents, Kwabena Manu, told journalists that he received a message from MTN at about 5:00 p.m on Tuesday, indicating that his SIM had been blocked due to an alleged breach of contract.

However, he said the company failed to specify the nature of the breach before taking action.

According to him, he initially believed the issue was isolated, only to discover upon arriving at the office that many other agents were facing similar challenges.

He further claimed that officials at the office informed them that the SIMs could only be unblocked upon clearance from the police or an order from a  court of competent jurisdiction.

Mr. Manu added that when they reported the matter to the Odorkor Divisional Police Command, they were asked to provide details of the alleged contract breach.

However, he alleged that MTN was unable to furnish them with the relevant contract documents and instead advised them to seek redress in court.

The affected agents insist that their funds remain locked on the blocked SIMs and have called on the company to engage them and resolve the matter urgently.
