A social media post by Nigerian comedian and television personality Basketmouth has triggered widespread reactions among Ghanaian social media users after he criticised the culture of promoting negativity over success online.

In the post shared on social media, Basketmouth argued that scandals and embarrassing moments often receive more attention than genuine achievements, hard work and creativity.

“Some Nigerian bloggers have mastered the art of turning negativity into premium content. One scandal trends for days, but genuine excellence barely gets a headline,” he wrote.

The comedian further questioned why controversy appears to dominate online conversations while achievements are often ignored.

“When was the last time brilliance trended the way controversy does? When did we stop applauding people for winning?” he added.

The post quickly drew reactions from many Ghanaian users, with some expressing surprise because it appeared to challenge the long-held belief that Nigerians consistently support and promote their own celebrities and public figures, unlike Ghanaians.

Several users said the comments showed that online criticism and negative trends are not unique to Ghanaian social media spaces, as similar concerns also exist in Nigeria despite the country’s reputation for strongly backing its entertainment industry.

Others agreed with Basketmouth’s message, calling for more attention to be given to achievement, discipline and creativity instead of controversy and public backlash.

The post has since generated discussions across multiple platforms, with users from both Ghana and Nigeria debating the role social media plays in shaping public perception and celebrity culture.
