Nearly 150 workers employed on some major infrastructure projects in Kumasi have lost their jobs following prolonged delays in government payments to the construction firm handling the projects.

The affected projects include the Kejetia Market Phase II redevelopment project, the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Maternity and Children’s Block and the Prempeh I International Airport project.

Speaking to Class News, Public Relations and Community Liaison Consultant for Contracta Construction UK Ltd in Kumasi, Emmanuel Danso, disclosed that engineers, technicians and labourers had been laid off as part of measures to cut operational and administrative costs.

According to him, work on the projects has stalled for nearly two years due to outstanding payments owed by government, adding that the company has received only one payment since 2024.

Mr. Danso, however, indicated that discussions are ongoing between government officials and the company’s management in Accra, expressing optimism that work would soon resume and affected employees recalled.

He further stated that the workers who were laid off received compensation before exiting the company.

The development has renewed concerns over delays affecting the completion of the major projects and the potential impact on employment, healthcare services, transportation and economic activity within Kumasi.
