Assemblies of God, Ghana defends Mahama over withdrawal of honorary degree

The Assemblies of God Ghana has expressed support for President John Dramani Mahama following the decision by Lincoln University to withdraw an honorary doctorate degree previously conferred on him.

The university is reported to have taken the decision in protest against the President’s stance on the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill currently before Parliament.

In a statement issued by its General Secretary, Rev Ernest Birikorang, the church said the move by the university does not dishonour the President but rather affirms his firm position on moral and religious values.

The Assemblies of God described the development as a moment of pride, noting that President Mahama, a member of the church, has remained consistent in his publicly stated views on issues relating to homosexuality.

The statement referenced biblical teachings, indicating that enduring criticism for one’s beliefs should be seen as a mark of conviction rather than shame.

The church further urged its members, particularly those in public service, to remain steadfast in their faith and moral principles regardless of external pressures.

It also called on the wider Christian community to pray for the nation, expressing hope that Ghana would uphold values it described as culturally and spiritually significant.
