The Bono Regional Minister, Joseph Addae Akwaboa, has issued a strong warning to cocoa smugglers and stakeholders involved in illegal activities within the cocoa sector, cautioning that offenders will face legal action.

Addressing a press briefing in Sunyani, the Minister stated that authorities are prepared to crack down on all individuals linked to cocoa smuggling, including Licensed Buying Companies (LBCs) and purchasing clerks found engaging in unlawful practices.

His remarks come after a recent intelligence-led operation at Nkrankwanta in the Dormaa West District, where the anti-smuggling taskforce of the Ghana Cocoa Board, in collaboration with security agencies, intercepted more than 100 bags of cocoa beans and arrested four suspects.

According to Mr. Akwaboa, initial investigations indicate that some buying companies are taking advantage of cocoa farmers, a situation he said is negatively affecting the trade.

He explained that disparities in cocoa prices between Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire are encouraging smuggling activities across the border.

The Minister noted that although the approved cocoa price is equivalent to more than GH¢2,500 per bag, some buyers allegedly pay farmers far below the expected rate.

He further alleged that additional deductions imposed by some operators significantly reduce farmers’ earnings.

Mr. Akwaboa said investigations are continuing to identify all persons connected to the illegal trade, adding that efforts are being intensified to dismantle smuggling networks and protect the interests of cocoa farmers.

He reaffirmed government’s commitment to preserving the integrity of the cocoa industry and ensuring fair returns for producers.
