The Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference (GCBC) has expressed solidarity with President John Dramani Mahama following the withdrawal of an honorary doctorate by Lincoln University.

In a press statement dated March 27, 2026, the bishops said they were concerned about the circumstances surrounding the decision, urging transparency, fairness and respect for the dignity of individuals and nations. They noted the longstanding historical ties between Ghana and the institution, referencing the legacy of Kwame Nkrumah.

The Conference also commended President Mahama for his role in securing international support for a recent United Nations resolution addressing the legacy of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade, describing the effort as a commitment to justice and global solidarity.

Additionally, the bishops praised the Assemblies of God Church, Ghana for publicly supporting the President. They acknowledged the leadership of its General Secretary, Ernest Birikorang, for what they described as a principled response.

On domestic matters, the GCBC urged the Parliament of Ghana to ensure the timely transmission of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill to the President for assent, calling on relevant authorities to act with diligence.

The bishops also assured President Mahama of their prayers, expressing hope that he would be guided with wisdom and clarity in carrying out his duties, including taking a decision on the bill.

The statement further called for prayer and national reflection, stressing the need for unity among Christian groups and the broader society.

The message was signed by Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference.
