The Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem Sai, has opposed suggestions to abolish jury trials in Ghana, stating that the focus should instead be on reforming the system with the support of technology.

He made the remarks at the Supreme Court @150 Luncheon held at the Cedi Conference Centre, where he emphasised that necessary reforms must not come at the expense of long-standing judicial practices.

According to him, technology can play a key role in improving how jury trials are conducted, rather than eliminating them entirely.

Dr Srem Sai also stressed the need to preserve Ghana’s judicial legacy, pointing out that landmark rulings have contributed significantly to the country’s democratic growth and the strengthening of the rule of law.

He noted that such decisions have reinforced the principle that justice should be accessible to all, not limited to a select few.

He further underscored the importance of maintaining the courts as neutral institutions, free from political interference, and capable of serving as fair arbiters in national matters.

The Deputy Attorney General cautioned against dragging the judiciary into partisan politics, warning that its credibility depends on its ability to interpret the law impartially.

He added that upholding due process and safeguarding judicial independence are essential to maintaining the integrity of the justice system and ensuring that democracy remains grounded in justice.

Dr Srem Sai also called on stakeholders to respect constitutional principles and protect the judiciary from undue influence.

He concluded by advocating reforms aimed at modernising the courts through digitalisation and improving access to justice across the country.
