The Electricity Company of Ghana has announced plans to undertake a major transformer replacement and upgrade exercise in selected parts of Accra to enhance electricity supply.

The project, which has received approval from the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, forms part of ongoing efforts to improve the reliability, stability, and capacity of power distribution across the country.

According to ECG, the exercise will involve the replacement and upgrade of 12 power transformers across six primary substations located in Adenta, La, Teshie-Nungua, Nmai-Dzor, Baatsonaa, and Lashibi.

The transformers will be upgraded from 20/26 MVA to 30/39 MVA, a move expected to significantly boost load-handling capacity and reduce system overloads in these rapidly growing communities.

The first phase of the programme is scheduled to commence on April 8, 2026, and is expected to be completed by April 10, 2026.

ECG indicated that the exercise will require brief planned power outages in the affected areas to ensure the safety of personnel and the successful execution of the works.

A detailed schedule outlining the affected communities, outage periods, and duration of the works will be published through the company’s official communication channels.

The power distributor assured customers that efforts will be made to minimise disruptions and urged residents and businesses to take note of the schedules and make the necessary arrangements.

ECG described the upgrade as a critical step toward strengthening infrastructure, improving system resilience, and delivering a more reliable and efficient electricity service.

The company also appealed for patience and cooperation from the public as it undertakes the essential improvement works.
