As Ghana marks the first anniversary of the military helicopter crash that killed two ministers, three Ghana Armed Forces personnel and three other officials, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) says the best tribute to the victims is measurable progress in the fight against illegal mining—the mission they were undertaking when the helicopter went down en route to Obuasi.

"The truest tribute to the departed is not a wreath or a lecture. It is results in the cause for which they gave their lives," the NPP said in a statement.

The party is calling on government to account for the progress made over the past year, providing evidence on the state of the country's rivers and water bodies, the number of forest reserves still under threat, and areas that have been reclaimed.

It also wants a full update on the official investigation into the crash including its findings, safety recommendations, and measures taken to protect public officials and security personnel travelling on official duty.

The NPP said remembrance must be matched with accountability, and that questions surrounding the anti-galamsey campaign and the helicopter crash should remain in the national spotlight.

"Remembrance is not a ceremony but a duty," the party said, adding that it would continue pressing for answers in Parliament and before the Ghanaian public until they are provided.
