Former Finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta no longer on ICE detainee list
Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is no longer being held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to information from the agency’s detainee tracking system.
The development was also confirmed by activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor, who cited sources indicating that Mr Ofori-Atta was released on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.
Mr Ofori-Atta had been in ICE custody since January 2026, following his arrest in the United States over issues related to his immigration status. He was detained in the Virginia area, with his legal representatives later explaining that the matter centred on the legality of his stay.
He was subsequently held at a detention facility in Virginia for several weeks while legal proceedings, including immigration hearings and an extradition request from Ghana, were ongoing. During that period, a U.S. court denied him bail as he challenged the case.
His detention attracted significant public and political interest due to his previous role in government.
The circumstances surrounding his release remain unclear, and it is yet to be determined whether he will remain in the United States or be subject to extradition. No official communication has been issued by U.S. authorities or his legal team regarding the terms of his release.
