Free Primary Healthcare rollout to start in 150 districts - Health Minister
The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced that the government will implement its Free Primary Healthcare policy in phases, beginning in 2026 with a focus on underserved communities before expanding nationwide by 2028.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday, April 13, the Minister described the initiative as a major national intervention aimed at improving access to essential health services.
He explained that the gradual rollout is a deliberate strategy to allow authorities to pilot the system, address potential challenges, and ensure its long-term viability before full-scale implementation.
Mr Akandoh indicated that preparations are already at an advanced stage, with key operational systems outlined ahead of the official launch.
He emphasised that the programme is backed by tangible investments, noting that government has procured more than 24,000 units of critical medical equipment to enhance service delivery at health facilities.
The supplies include incubators to support newborn care, glucometers for diabetes detection and management, hospital beds to increase patient capacity, and ultrasound machines to improve diagnostic services, particularly in maternal healthcare.
The phased rollout is expected to boost access to primary healthcare, especially in deprived areas, while reducing the burden on higher-level facilities.
With implementation set to begin in selected districts, the initiative represents a significant step towards building a more inclusive and resilient healthcare system in Ghana.
