The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, has sworn in a new 12-member Board of the Fisheries Commission Ghana, marking the rollout of governance reforms under the Fisheries Act 1146.

The reconstituted Board forms part of the implementation of the new legal framework, which expands institutional representation to strengthen oversight and improve coordination in the management of Ghana’s fisheries resources.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Minister described the appointment of the Board members as “not just administrative, but a national calling,” urging them to uphold accountability, environmental stewardship, and commitment to the country’s Blue Economy agenda.

She stressed that the Board is expected to drive a sustainable and well-governed fisheries sector that supports food security, creates jobs, and contributes to economic growth.

The Board is chaired by Prof Wisdom Akpalu and includes representatives from key state institutions and industry stakeholders.

Members include representatives from the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Fisheries Commission, Ghana Maritime Authority, Ghana Navy, Ghana Police Service, Environmental Protection Authority, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Fisheries and Aquaculture Research Institute, Water Resources sector agencies, Veterinary Services Directorate, and the Ghana Tuna Association.

The diverse composition is expected to enhance inter-agency collaboration and bring technical expertise to bear on issues such as marine conservation, sustainable fisheries management, and sector regulation.

With the Board now formally constituted, it is expected to play a key role in shaping policy direction and ensuring the long-term sustainability of Ghana’s fisheries industry.
