The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has cleared 170 kilometres of the 176-kilometre corridor designated for the construction of the proposed Accra-Kumasi Expressway.

The latest milestone leaves just six kilometres outstanding, signalling that the corridor preparation phase of the major road project is nearing completion.

The military engineering team is expected to tackle the remaining stretch as it progresses towards Sawua.

In an update posted on X on Thursday, September 3, the Ghana Armed Forces said the exercise had entered its final phase and praised its engineers for making significant progress despite the difficult terrain.

“The finish line is in sight. Out of 176 kilometres of challenging terrain, just 6 KM REMAIN!” the GAF said.

The latest development comes about two months after the Armed Forces reported that more than half of the designated corridor had been cleared.

As of June 25, 2026, the engineers had completed 89.5 kilometres, representing 50.9% of the total corridor.

The corridor-clearing exercise was initially expected to be completed within 20 weeks and forms part of the preparatory work required before full-scale construction of the expressway.

Clearing the corridor is intended to establish the required right of way for the project and facilitate subsequent construction activities.

The proposed Accra-Kumasi Expressway is expected to provide a faster connection between the two major cities, shorten travel times, ease pressure on existing roads and improve the movement of passengers and freight.

With only six kilometres left, the GAF engineering team is now expected to complete the remaining section as preparations for the next phase of the project gather momentum.
