The Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Adwoa Oboubia Darko-Opoku, has announced that the Fund will officially begin a nationwide patient support programme in June 2026 following the successful completion of a pilot phase earlier this year.

According to the Administrator, the Board of Trustees approved an initial pilot programme in February involving 50 patients from different parts of the country to test the Fund’s operational systems.

The pilot phase focused on assessing patient onboarding procedures, treatment monitoring processes, and claims management systems ahead of the nationwide rollout.

The beneficiaries received financial support for a range of specialised medical treatments, including heart surgeries, brain surgeries, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and orthopaedic procedures.

So far, more than GHS4.8 million has been spent on the treatment and care of the patients under the pilot programme.

The beneficiaries, aged between six months and 85 years, were treated across 11 hospitals nationwide.

She explained that the  pilot programme has provided valuable insights into the operational requirements needed to effectively manage the nationwide support initiative.

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as Mahama Cares, was established to provide support for patients requiring critical and specialised medical treatment while improving access to healthcare for vulnerable Ghanaians.
