The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has held high-level bilateral talks with José Manuel Albares Bueno in Barcelona, focusing on migration, labour cooperation, and global peace.

The discussions, described as constructive and substantive, highlighted growing cooperation between Ghana and Spain.

During the meeting, Mr. Ablakwa commended the Spanish government, led by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, for its newly introduced immigration policy aimed at regularising the status of approximately 500,000 undocumented migrants.

The policy, scheduled for implementation between April 16 and the end of June 2026, seeks to grant legal status, employment opportunities, and social protection to migrants who have lived in Spain for a specified period.

According to the Ghanaian Foreign Minister, the initiative represents a “forward-looking and humane” approach that promotes dignity, inclusion, and economic participation.

He noted that beyond improving the lives of migrants, the policy also addresses Spain’s ageing population while fostering remittances, skills development, and multicultural integration.

Mr. Ablakwa further outlined measures being taken by the Government of Ghana to support nationals who may benefit from the programme.

He indicated that the Ministry will assist applicants in securing the necessary documentation, including proof of a clean criminal record, which is a key requirement under the policy.

Beyond migration, both countries agreed to deepen collaboration in maritime security and expedite the signing of labour mobility agreements to facilitate legal employment opportunities.

The two nations also reaffirmed their shared commitment to global peace, pledging to continue advocating for a world free from conflict.
