Minority in parliament signals a strong rejection of any new tax proposals from the government.

The Minority in Parliament says it will strongly oppose any move by government to impose fresh taxes or levies on Ghanaians, arguing that the current economic difficulties have already placed unbearable pressure on citizens.

The caucus made the remarks during a media engagement by parliamentary leadership today where several national economic and governance concerns were discussed.

Addressing journalists on behalf of the Minority, Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei accused the government of shifting its position on taxation since the National Democratic Congress assumed office in January 2025.

She noted that although the Minority supports prudent financial management and efforts to reduce excessive government spending, many of the measures announced by the administration have not translated into meaningful relief for the average Ghanaian.

According to her, government’s attempts at reform have largely remained slow and cosmetic, with little improvement in the cost of living and the economic challenges facing households and businesses.

“The Minority welcomes genuine efforts to cut waste, but reforms so far appear too slow and largely cosmetic. Ghanaians are taxed enough and the Minority reiterates its firm position of no new taxes on an already burdened citizenry.

“It must be placed on record that the NDC, while in opposition, vehemently opposed some taxes, yet has introduced its own levies in government, which contradicts its promise.”
