Nana B accuses NDC government of inconsistency on LGBTQI stance
The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has alleged that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) politicised LGBTQI matters during the lead-up to the 2024 general elections to the disadvantage of the then-ruling NPP.
According to him, the NDC drew religious leaders into the discourse, intensifying public sentiment around the issue and contributing to the NPP’s electoral loss. He further claimed that the NDC’s posture appears to have shifted following their victory at the polls.
These remarks come amid renewed national conversations on LGBTQ+ rights, after President John Dramani Mahama appealed for calm and constructive engagement on the subject. Speaking at a Presidential Dialogue with Civil Society Organisations held at Jubilee House in Accra on Monday, March 30, the President emphasised that while the issue remains significant, it should not overshadow more urgent national concerns.
He described the topic as highly sensitive and capable of stirring strong emotions, even in countries with more liberal traditions, and encouraged stakeholders to engage one another with tolerance and mutual respect, in line with Ghanaian cultural values.
President Mahama reiterated that his administration’s primary focus is on tackling critical socio-economic challenges, including job creation and improving access to essential public services. He also pointed out that the ongoing deliberations in Parliament on a private member’s bill reflect the diversity of opinions across the country, stressing that any decision must align with constitutional provisions and uphold fundamental human rights.
