Over 60% of Ghana’s SIM registration data ‘unfit for purpose’ — Parliament Committee Chair calls for fresh exercise

Abednego Bandim addressing the press

The Chairman of Parliament’s Information and Communications Committee, Abednego Bandim, has disclosed that more than 60 percent of data captured during Ghana’s 2021 SIM card registration exercise is inaccurate, raising concerns about the integrity of the system.

According to him, an audit conducted on the exercise revealed widespread irregularities, rendering much of the data unreliable and unfit for its intended purpose.

Speaking to journalists after a meeting with Mr Samuel Nartey George, the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Mr Bandim said the findings underscore the urgent need for a new and more credible SIM registration process.

He explained that the proposed re-registration exercise would be designed to strengthen data accuracy and enhance efforts to combat mobile money (MoMo) fraud, which has become a growing concern in the country.

The Bunkpurugu legislator further assured the public that the planned re-registration will come at no cost to subscribers, indicating that mobile network operators will absorb all associated expenses.
