Petition filed at CHRAJ over alleged misconduct by Free Zones Authority CEO

A petition has been filed at the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) seeking an investigation into alleged misconduct and misuse of official working time by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Mary Awusi.

The petitioners are calling on CHRAJ to investigate what they describe as frequent media appearances by the CEO during official working hours, arguing that such engagements are unrelated to her statutory responsibilities and may constitute a breach of public service ethics.

According to the petition, Dr. Awusi allegedly participated in a radio discussion on Accra 100.5 FM on April 23, 2026, during which she commented on national issues including illegal mining and also made remarks concerning the leadership of the Church of Pentecost.

The petition was co-signed by Prince Owusu Bonnah, Christiana Acheampong and  Sebastian Ampah

The petition further alleges that during the said interview, the CEO made comments questioning the moral authority and spiritual standing of the Church’s leadership, statements the petitioners say are inappropriate for a public office holder and unrelated to her mandate.

The complainants argue that such conduct reflects possible misuse of official time and public resources, and could expose the Free Zones Authority to reputational risk.

They are therefore urging CHRAJ to determine whether the conduct amounts to administrative impropriety, abuse of office, or a breach of the Code of Conduct for public officers under Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

The petitioners are also requesting a full investigation, appropriate sanctions where necessary, and clearer guidelines to ensure public officers strictly adhere to ethical standards in the discharge of their duties.

Attached to the petition are media recordings and supporting materials said to document the CEO’s public engagements during official working hours.

Copies of the petition have also been forwarded to the Chief of Staff at the Office of the President.
