Tema Traditional Council announces ban on drumming and noise-making ahead of Homowo festival
The Tema Traditional Council in the Greater Accra Region has announced the annual customary ban on drumming and noise-making as part of preparations for the revered Homowo Festival.
According to a directive issued on March 2, 2026, the ban will take effect from Friday, May 1, to Saturday, May 23, 2026, across the Tema Traditional Area.
During the period, drumming, loud noise-making, burial and funeral ceremonies will be strictly prohibited.
The directive applies to Tema Manhean and other communities within the traditional area, including Ashaiman, Zeenu, Kubekro, Adigon, Saasabi, Klanngon, Adjei Kojo, Sakumono and Adjeiman.
Residents, religious bodies, social groups, drinking spots, pubs and event organisers have been urged to strictly comply with the directive to enable traditional authorities to perform the customary rites peacefully.
The council explained that the ban forms an important part of cultural preparations leading to the celebration of the Homowo Festival and helps preserve order, respect for tradition and harmony within the community.
