The Tijjaniya Muslims Movement of Ghana (TMMG) has formally commended President John Dramani Mahama for what it describes as his firm and principled stance on preserving national values and rejecting LGBTQ+ influence.

In a statement issued under the guidance of Zaeem Sheikh Imam Abdul Wadudi Haruna, the group expressed “profound appreciation” for the President’s reaffirmation that he will sign the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill into law once it is passed by Parliament. The movement also praised his call on international partners to respect Ghana’s sovereignty, cultural heritage, and what it described as the national consensus shaping public policy.

Islamic Basis for Support

The TMMG stated that its position is rooted in Islamic teachings and the spiritual traditions of the Tijjaniya Sufi order, maintaining that LGBTQ+ practices are “diametrically opposed to the divine laws of Allah and the traditions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW).”

To support its stance, the group cited specific religious sources:

- The Holy Quran: Referencing Surah Al-A’raf (7:81), the statement quoted: “Indeed, you approach men with desire instead of women. Rather, you are a transgressing people.” The movement said this underscores that such practices are contrary to the divine design of human companionship and family.

- The Hadith: The group noted that the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) emphasized the preservation of the natural fitra(human nature), warning against imitating the behaviors of the people of Lut, which it said leads to moral decay and the withdrawal of divine blessings from a nation.

- National Stability: The TMMG added that upholding these values is not only a religious obligation but also a national necessity to protect what it described as the moral fabric of the Ghanaian family.

Call to Action

The movement urged President Mahama to remain defiant in the face of external pressures, including threats related to international funding, stressing that multilateral institutions should not impose cultural values on sovereign nations.

It also called on Parliament to expedite the legislative process on the reintroduced bill to ensure it is presented to the President for assent without delay.

The statement concluded with a prayer for national leadership, asking for divine guidance and protection against what it termed moral transgression.

The statement was signed by Alhaji Khuzaima Mohammed Osman, Executive Secretary of the Tijjaniya Muslims Movement of Ghana.
