Two power units restored after Akosombo substation fire – Jinapor
The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced that two power generation units have been brought back into operation after recent supply disruptions linked to the fire at the Ghana Grid Company substation in Akosombo.
The incident, which affected the facility’s control room, significantly reduced the system’s ability to transmit and evacuate electricity.
Addressing the Government Accountability Series on Monday, April 27, the Minister said ongoing emergency interventions have led to a gradual recovery, with progress being made toward restoring full stability.
He revealed that one unit was reactivated on Sunday, April 26, with a second unit now also operational, contributing to improved power flow.
According to him, work is still underway on a third unit, which is expected to be restored soon as part of efforts to stabilise the system.
Mr. Jinapor assured that engineers remain on site working continuously to bring all units back online and fully restore reliable power supply across the country.
“Through emergency technical interventions, the first generation unit was successfully restored yesterday. This afternoon, I received confirmation that the second unit has also been brought on and is generating power. The third unit is undergoing works and will also be brought on as soon as possible,” he said.
