US Embassy cautions Ghanaians against overstaying visas during World Cup
The Consul General at the US Embassy in Ghana, Elliot Fertik, has warned Ghanaians traveling to the United States for the upcoming FIFA World Cup against overstaying their visas, highlighting serious legal and long-term consequences.
Speaking on Channel One TV's World Cup Central on Friday, May 15, Mr Fertik addressed concerns that some travelers might use the tournament as an opportunity to remain in the US illegally.
He emphasised that visa overstays violate immigration laws and negatively impact other Ghanaian citizens seeking legitimate travel.
According to Mr. Fertik, immigration authorities closely track overstay rates by nationality. A high rate of violations from a specific country can make it more difficult for future applicants from that nation to secure visa approvals.
"There are some people who think they can use this as an opportunity to overstay or just to illegally stay in the United States," Fertik stated.
"And that’s really unfortunate because not only are they breaking the law, but they’re also making it harder for other Ghanaians."
He urged prospective travelers to strictly follow visa conditions, reiterating that illegal immigration and overstaying damage trust within the immigration system and undermine legitimate travel opportunities.
