Residents of Nungua and its surrounding communities in the Krowor Constituency have praised their Member of Parliament, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, for what they describe as a significant transformation in the constituency through her various empowerment initiatives.

The constituents said Krowor had, since the inception of Ghana’s Fourth Republic, been represented by several Members of Parliament but they had not experienced the level of direct support they are currently witnessing under Dr. Naa Momo Lartey.

According to them, the various interventions being introduced by the MP are giving them a renewed sense of hope and demonstrating the importance of effective representation.

“We have seen the benefits of voting for the first time through Naa Momo,” some of the constituents said.

They added that the support was making a direct difference in the lives of ordinary residents, particularly women and young people who were struggling to establish or expand their businesses.

“This is the kind of representation we have been waiting for. The equipment and financial support will help us to work, earn an income and take care of our families,” one beneficiary said.

They made the remarks following a business support programme organised by the MP, under which hundreds of constituents were empowered with equipment and financial assistance to establish or expand their businesses.

Among the items distributed were industrial sewing machines, ordinary sewing machines, deep freezers, hair-dryer machines, cash support, bags of maize for kenkey sellers, water storage tanks and other business equipment.

The beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the MP, saying the intervention would enable them to improve their businesses, increase their incomes and provide better livelihoods for themselves and their families.

Some of the constituents also pledged their continued support for Dr. Naa Momo Lartey in future elections, expressing the hope that her continued representation would lead to further development and transformation of the Krowor Constituency.

Speaking on the initiative, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, who is also the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, said although the core responsibilities of a Member of Parliament are lawmaking and exercising oversight over the Executive, she believed MPs could also contribute to improving the economic wellbeing of their constituents.

“My responsibility does not end in Parliament. I must also think about how the people who gave me their mandate can improve their livelihoods and become economically independent,” Dr. Naa Momo Lartey said.

She explained that the NDC, while in opposition, promised Ghanaians that it would create employment opportunities and improve livelihoods when given the mandate to govern.

However, she noted that government could not create all the needed jobs overnight, which informed her decision to complement government’s efforts by empowering constituents to create sustainable sources of income for themselves.

Dr. Naa Momo Lartey drew inspiration from the popular adage, “You teach people how to fish rather than giving them fish all the time.”

She said the objective of the initiative was therefore not simply to provide temporary relief but to equip constituents with the means to build sustainable livelihoods.

“What we are doing is to give people the tools they need to create something for themselves. If we can empower one person to establish a sustainable business, that person can also support a family and even create opportunities for others,” she said.

The MP said her ultimate ambition was to leave a legacy in which the people of Krowor would enjoy better living conditions and improved economic opportunities.

She also assured constituents that her office remained open to all residents, regardless of their political affiliation.

“I have vowed to serve Krowor, and not only members of my party,” Dr. Naa Momo Lartey said.
