Minister vows to act on Weija Dam encroachment, orders repair of broken filtration units
The Minister for Works, Housing, and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has promised to take action on encroachments at the Weija Dam site, following a visit to the area.
Accompanied by the Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited, Adam Mutavwakilu, the Minister inspected the dam and treatment plant, citing concerns over sand winning and farming activities near the dam.
According to the Minister, encroachments and sand-winning activities are threatening the dam's integrity.
Four out of 12 filtration units at the treatment plant are not functioning.
The Minister has directed Ghana Water to repair the broken units.
In his remarks, he said, "We are going to take it up and ensure that we don't get further encroachment.
"I'm going to engage my colleague, the Local Government Minister, and the Interior Minister to put in place punitive measures."
"We need to protect the dam and ensure a sustainable water supply for the people."
