Minority demands scrapping of GHS1 fuel levy amid rising prices

The Minority in Parliament is urging government to immediately abolish the GHS1 fuel levy, warning that it is worsening the financial burden on Ghanaians already grappling with the high cost of living.

The Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Energy Committee, Collins Adomako-Mensah, made the call while speaking to journalists on the sidelines of parliamentary proceedings.

His remarks come in the wake of a fresh increase in fuel prices, attributed to escalating geopolitical tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran, as well as disruptions linked to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Mr. Adomako-Mensah explained that the levy, introduced under the Energy Sector Levy Amendment Act 2025, was originally intended to support fuel procurement and help clear longstanding debts in the energy sector.

However, he argued that current economic conditions no longer justify its continuation.

He further disclosed that the Minority plans to push for a comprehensive review of all taxes embedded in petroleum pricing, with the aim of identifying ways to reduce the cost burden on consumers.

The Minority’s position is expected to intensify debate over fuel pricing and taxation, as government balances revenue generation with growing public concerns over living costs.
