GIFEC to be rebranded as Digital Economy and Innovation Fund
The Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) is set to undergo a major transformation aimed at aligning its operations with Ghana’s expanding digital agenda and rural connectivity drive.
According to the Chief Executive Officer of GIFEC, Dr. Rashid Tanko-Computer, the organisation will soon be rebranded as the Digital Economy and Innovation Fund (DEIFund) as part of ongoing institutional reforms to better reflect its current mandate in rural telephony and digital infrastructure development.
Speaking in an interview on the Ghana Yensom morning show on Accra 100.5 FM on Friday, October 24, 2025, Dr. Tanko-Computer revealed that the Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Samuel Nartey George, will present a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to Cabinet for consideration and approval of the rebranding proposal.
“Once Cabinet approves the memo, a Bill will be laid before Parliament to officially rename GIFEC as the Digital Economy and Innovation Fund,” Dr. Tanko-Computer stated.
He explained that the new name will more accurately represent the Fund’s broadened scope, which now includes digital innovation, ICT capacity development, and inclusive rural connectivity.
Dr. Tanko-Computer cautioned that Ghana’s digital transformation must not be limited to urban areas, emphasising the need for inclusive growth.
“Digitalisation in Accra alone will take us nowhere. Ghana’s digitalisation will be meaningful only when our rural communities are fully included,” he said.
To ensure effective monitoring and local engagement, GIFEC has begun establishing regional offices across all 16 regions, with plans to expand to district-level offices in the near future.
The reforms are part of the government’s broader vision to bridge the digital divide and ensure that every Ghanaian—regardless of location—benefits from the opportunities of the digital economy.
