Austria defeats Black Stars 5-1 in pre WC friendly
Austria secured a 5-1 victory over Ghana in an international friendly on Friday at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion, overcoming a strong first-half showing from the Black Stars.
Ghana held Austria at bay in the first half, but the hosts surged after the break, scoring four second-half goals. Austria opened the scoring with a Marcel Sabitzer penalty after a foul on Jonas Adjetey. Michael Gregoritsch and Stefan Posch added goals in quick succession following halftime.
Ghana captain Jordan Ayew pulled one back in the 77th minute, but Austria responded with a stunning strike from Carney Chukwuemeka, followed by a late goal from Nicolas Seiwald to complete the 5-1 win.
Otto Addo’s starting lineup featured Lawrence Ati-Zigi in goal, with a back four of Caleb Yirenkyi, Derrick Kohn, Alexander Djiku, and Jonas Adjetey. Thomas Partey and Kwasi Sibo partnered in midfield, while Abdul Fatawu Issahaku and Antoine Semenyo played on the wings, supporting forwards Jordan Ayew and Prince Kwabena Adu.
Substitutes Gideon Mensah, Elisha Owusu, Patric Pfeiffer, Ransford Yeboah Konigsdorffer, Kamal Deen Sulemana, and Christopher Bonsu Baah were introduced but could not change the outcome.
The Black Stars will now face Germany national football team in Stuttgart on Monday, March 30, 2026, in their next World Cup 2026 preparatory friendly.
