Davor Suker: Croatia is no longer an underdog ahead of 2026 World Cup

Former Croatia striker Davor Suker has declared that Croatia can no longer be seen as an underdog in world football, following the nation’s impressive performances on the global stage.

Croatia, drawn in Group L alongside England, Panama, and Ghana, will begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in North America this summer, with matches co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Speaking to FIFA, Suker highlighted the country’s consistent success in recent tournaments, particularly reaching the semi-finals in Qatar, as evidence of Croatia’s elevated status.

"Reaching the semi-finals again in Qatar felt like confirmation Croatia is no longer an underdog story," Suker said.

"It’s a football nation with standards."

The 1998 World Cup third-place hero emphasised that Croatia should now be regarded as serious competitors rather than mere participants.

“When you finish as runners-up and then in third place at back-to-back World Cups, you’re no longer just participants, but you compete for the trophy. Croatia won’t fear anyone,” he added.

Croatia will kick off their World Cup campaign against England on June 17, before facing Panama on June 24 and concluding their group fixtures against Ghana on June 27.

Ahead of the tournament, Croatia is scheduled for several friendlies, including matches against Colombia and Brazil in March, followed by Belgium on June 2 and Slovenia on June 7, as part of their final preparations.
