Government to buy World Cup match tickets for Diaspora fans, says President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government will procure match tickets for Ghanaians living abroad to support the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking at a diaspora town hall meeting on Sunday, May 31, 2026, the President explained that the initiative aims to mobilize Ghanaian communities already based in the host nations to cheer on the national team.

However, President Mahama clarified that unlike during previous World Cup tournaments, the government will not fully sponsor large groups of supporters traveling directly from Ghana, citing the high financial burden and the necessity for fiscal discipline.

He noted that because the tournament is spread across three host nations — Canada, Mexico, and the United States — logistical costs have significantly increased, making mass state-sponsored travel impractical.

The President estimated that the full package to support a single fan from Ghana through the tournament — covering transportation, accommodation, feeding, and match tickets — would cost nearly $11,000, a figure he described as unsustainable under current economic conditions. Consequently, state support will pivot toward organised supporters' groups and Ghanaian communities already located near the tournament venues.

“What we are doing is that we are procuring tickets for Ghanaians in the diaspora who want to attend the games. So if you want to attend the game, you will get a ticket to attend the game," President Mahama stated.

“We have organised our chapters, our Ghanaian citizens in Boston, Philadelphia and Canada. The tickets that we have purchased, we will give to them to enable them to watch the matches,” he added.

The President encouraged Ghanaians abroad who are planning to travel to the host cities to coordinate with recognized local community groups, noting that administrative arrangements are underway to ensure a fair distribution of the match tickets.
