Kyere-Duah touts World Cup as economic catalyst, not just sporting event

The Member of Parliament for Berekum West, Dickson Kyere-Duah, has underscored the broader economic value of Ghana’s participation in the FIFA World Cup, arguing that the tournament should be viewed not merely as a sporting spectacle but as a strategic avenue for tourism and national revenue generation.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Kyere-Duah maintained that Ghana’s qualification for the FIFA World Cup presents significant opportunities beyond football.

According to him, global tournaments of such magnitude attract international attention, stimulate tourism inflows, promote local businesses and enhance a country’s global image.

He stressed that the World Cup platform offers Ghana the chance to showcase its culture, hospitality and investment potential to millions of viewers worldwide.

This exposure, he argued, can translate into increased tourist arrivals, hotel occupancy, patronage of local enterprises and broader economic activity.

The MP further linked this vision to President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to sports development, including plans to invest heavily in modern sporting infrastructure.

He noted that strategic spending in the sector should be seen as an investment with long-term economic returns rather than mere expenditure on recreation.

Kyere-Duah therefore called on fellow lawmakers to support policies that position sports as a viable socioeconomic tool, insisting that when properly managed, international competitions like the World Cup can serve as catalysts for tourism growth and national development.

His remarks are expected to spark debate, with the Minority likely to demand clear frameworks to ensure that projected tourism and economic gains are realised and not overstated.
