Berekum Chelsea details armed attack that claimed Dominic Frimpong’s life
Berekum Chelsea FC has released details of the armed robbery attack on its team bus following a Ghana Premier League match against Samartex FC.
The club confirmed that Dominic Frimpong died as a result of the incident, while other members of the team sustained injuries.
In a statement, Berekum Chelsea said the attack occurred as the team was returning to Berekum from Samreboi, when armed men blocked the road.
The attackers, described as masked and carrying guns and assault rifles, opened fire on the bus as the driver attempted to reverse. Players and officials fled into nearby bushes to escape.
The club said one player suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for initial treatment before arrangements were made to transfer him to a regional facility.
Berekum Chelsea expressed appreciation to a police patrol team for responding to the situation, as well as to members of the media for sharing information.
The club also acknowledged residents of Ahyiresu for providing shelter to players and officials after the attack and thanked Bibiani Gold Stars FC for their support.
It further extended appreciation to the President of the Ghana Football Association for his response.
The club said it would provide further updates as the situation develops and expressed hope for the recovery of the injured player.
The incident has raised concerns about security for teams travelling for domestic matches.
