The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, has stated that a successful outing by the Black Stars at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup would be a fitting way to honor the 127 football fans who died in the May 9 stadium disaster.

Speaking on Saturday, May 9, 2026, during the silver jubilee remembrance ceremony at the Accra Sports Stadium, Mr Adams offered condolences to the families of the victims of the tragedy, which occurred 25 years ago during a match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.

Mr Adams expressed hope that the memory of the deceased would serve as an inspiration for the national team as they prepare for the global tournament hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

He noted that the annual commemoration remains vital for educating younger generations of supporters who were not alive during the 2001 disaster, ensuring they understand the history and the importance of safety.

According to the minister, the lessons learned from the tragedy have directly led to improved stadium safety and crowd management protocols over the past two and a half decades.

The minister also used the occasion to reaffirm the government’s dedication to using sports as a tool for youth employment and development while urging all football fans to completely reject violence and hooliganism.

Prosper Harrison Addo, the General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), added that the anniversary serves as a permanent reminder to uphold discipline and fair play, noting that the football fraternity continues to stand in solidarity with the bereaved families.

Representatives from Ghana's two largest clubs, including Hearts of Oak Managing Director Julius Enumah and Asante Kotoko Commercial Manager Charles Hammond, also pledged their continued support to the families of the fallen fans.

The silver jubilee event concluded with a formal wreath-laying ceremony performed by officials from the Ministry of Sports, the GFA, and leadership from both Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.
