The Deputy Minister for Finance and Chairman of the Black Stars World Cup Fundraising Committee, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, has received a cheque for GHS3 million from Stanbic Bank Ghana in support of Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The donation forms part of a broader fundraising initiative launched by President John Dramani Mahama in March, aimed at raising $30 million from corporate institutions and individuals to support the Ghana national football team ahead of the tournament in North America.

Ghana is set to make its fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup and has been drawn in Group L of the expanded 48-team competition.

The Black Stars are scheduled to face Panama in Toronto on June 17, England in Boston on June 23, and Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27.

Presenting the cheque, Stanbic Bank Chief Executive, Kwamina Asomaning explained that the bank’s support package was structured in two parts — an initial participation contribution to support immediate preparations and a performance-based incentive package aimed at motivating the team to progress deep into the tournament.

According to him, the incentive package extends all the way to the final stage of the competition and would be redirected to a charity selected by the Black Stars if the team does not reach those stages.

“It’s a great pride for us to come together to support the Black Stars,” Mr. Asomaning stated, adding that the bank has a long-standing commitment to sports development in Ghana through sponsorship of disciplines including table tennis, badminton, basketball, hockey, swimming, and football.

Other contributors announced during the event included Newmont Ghana, which donated $500,000, and OmniBSIC Bank, which contributed GHS250,000.

Receiving the donations, Hon. Ampem expressed appreciation to the corporate institutions for their patriotic support towards Ghana’s World Cup campaign.

He disclosed that the fundraising committee would continue to receive donations every Thursday as efforts intensify to support the Black Stars ahead of the global tournament.
