Leave Black Stars players alone, they gave everything – Otto Addo dismisses resignation calls
Black Stars coach Otto Addo has rejected calls for his resignation, reiterating his dedication to leading the national team despite recent setbacks.
His statement follows a 2-1 loss to Niger in the final Group F match of the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON), which drew heavy criticism from sections of the public and media.
At a press briefing, the manager of the Black Stars dismissed suggestions that he step down, highlighting his resilience and journey as a player and coach.
“I’m not the person who can resign. If I had done this, I’d never have become a player or even a coach. If you know where I have come from as a person to arrive at this job, you won’t even ask about my resignation. People shouting and telling me to resign can’t affect me,” he said.
Addo acknowledged the team’s struggles but noted some bright spots in their performance, particularly from players who seized the opportunity to shine. He stressed the importance of constructive support from fans and the media.
“We started okay but conceded a goal from a set piece. We were aware because the last time we met, they scored from a corner. Surely, we have to defend these set pieces better. It seems everything is going against us,” he conceded.
He called on the media to use their influence to motivate the players rather than add to the pressure.
“The media has the power to control the narratives of games, not only the results. You have the power to lift somebody. I really need you to leave the players alone because they gave us everything.”
Remaining resolute, Addo emphasised that his experience and perseverance equip him to guide the team through tough times, urging Ghanaians to rally behind the Black Stars as they work to overcome their challenges.
