Klint Da Drunk credits Ghana for launching his global comedy career
Veteran Nigerian comedian Klint Da Drunk has expressed profound gratitude to Ghana, identifying the country as the definitive turning point for his professional success. Speaking with Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z, the comedian revealed that while he was a rising act in Nigeria, his career achieved its major "kick-off" following a single performance in Accra.
Reflecting on his breakout moment, the comedian recalled his appearance during the first season of the popular reality show TV3 Mentor.
He noted that prior to the broadcast, he was virtually unknown to the Ghanaian public, who were largely focused on established Nigerian movie stars like Desmond Elliot and Segun Arinze.
However, his performance that night, delivered in his trademark "drunk" persona, changed his trajectory instantly.
“A day before nobody knew me," he recounted.
"But the following day, from the hotel we were staying in, people were snapping pictures with me... Desmond Elliot and Segun Arinze both sat and watched me enjoy what they were enjoying.”
The performance remains a standout in Ghanaian pop culture history.
Despite not having a prior rehearsal with the live band, Klint Da Drunk captivated the auditorium with a routine centered on the rhythmic phrases used by reggae musicians.
His portrayal, characterized by a staggering walk and folded trousers, turned him into a household name overnight.
Klint Da Drunk, born Afamefuna Klint Igwemba, credited the sustained support of the Ghanaian audience for his continued relevance across the continent.
He stated that his love for the country is rooted in the platform it provided him at a time when he was still establishing his comedic identity.
Today, he is widely regarded as a pioneer of the "drunk" character in stand-up comedy, a role that has seen him perform on major stages globally.
