Ghanaian actor and television host Kwaku Manu has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama not to approve the renewal of Gold Fields’ mining licence when it expires in 2027.

According to the actor, Ghana must begin taking full control of important sectors of the economy by empowering local investors and reducing dependence on foreign-owned companies.

Kwaku Manu made the remarks in a video shared online while discussions continue across the country over the future of large-scale mining operations. Recent comments from government officials suggest that mining licence renewals may no longer be automatic, as companies will now be required to prove their commitment to environmental safety, local job creation, and community support before being considered for extensions.

Gold Fields’ current mining lease is expected to end in January 2027, sparking public debate over whether the company should be allowed to continue operating in Ghana.

Before addressing the mining issue, Kwaku Manu commended Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa for helping to facilitate the return of Ghanaians from South Africa amid reports of xenophobic attacks.

He praised the minister for what he described as effective leadership and support for Ghanaians living abroad.

“Let’s put politics aside. The Foreign Affairs Minister is doing a great job. Recently, he helped secure the release of some Ghanaian soldiers in Russia who were detained by Ukraine, and today, Ghanaians in South Africa, some of whom had been detained, have been brought home as promised,” he said.

Kwaku Manu later appealed directly to President Mahama to reject reports of a possible 20-year extension being sought by Gold Fields.

“I heard Gold Fields is seeking a 20-year renewal of their lease. Mr President, please do not renew it for them. We should not create tension or expel South Africans, but it is time Ghana takes control of key businesses,” he stated.

The actor further argued that several Ghanaian businessmen and mining professionals have the experience and capacity to manage such operations successfully.

He mentioned businessman Ibrahim Mahama and other local mining experts as examples of people capable of taking over the concession if the licence is not renewed.

“We have Ibrahim Mahama, who I hear has been given some mining concessions, and other Ghanaians with mining expertise who can manage these operations,” he added.
