MUSIGA, copyright system must work to boost Ghana’s music Industry – Soul Winners
Soul Winners has called for stronger structures within Ghana’s music industry, stressing that effective royalty systems and institutional accountability are key to helping musicians thrive.
In an interview on Journey to Heaven on Accra-based No.1 FM, hosted by Taller Dee, the group highlighted major gaps in how musicians are compensated for their work.
According to Soul Winners, organizations such as the Musicians Union of Ghana and the Ghana Music Rights Organisation have significant roles to play in ensuring artists receive fair royalties. However, they lamented that the current system is failing many musicians.
The group revealed that despite registering their songs with GHAMRO, they have received little to no meaningful returns. “You will be amazed that songs played on radio and used for other purposes earn artists as little as GHS50 or GHS100 when they go to the copyright office,” they stated.
They further disclosed that they personally received only GHS50 after registering their works, with no additional royalties paid since then, despite multiple recordings.
Soul Winners stressed that in a properly structured industry, musicians should be able to earn a sustainable living from their craft. “People have lived on music, and people are still living on music. When the right structures are in place and proper documentation is done, you can survive on music,” they explained.
The group also raised concerns about the increasing use of cover versions without proper recognition or compensation for original creators. They noted that traditionally, anyone who re-recorded another artist’s song was required to pay royalties to the original songwriter. However, they say this practice is no longer strictly followed, depriving rightful owners of their earnings.
They believe that fixing these systemic issues will not only ensure fairness but also drive growth in Ghana’s music industry.
