More survival than Industry – Soul Winners speaks on Ghana’s gospel music reality
A member of the gospel group Soul Winners has sparked conversation about the state of Ghana’s music space, describing it as fragmented and driven more by survival than by structure.
Speaking on Journey to Heaven on Accra-based No.1 FM with host Taller Dee, the musician explained that there is no single word that can fully define the gospel music sector in Ghana.
According to him, the gospel scene does not operate under a unified system or clear regulatory framework, making it difficult to describe it as a fully developed “industry.”
“You can’t find one solid word to describe the gospel music space,” he said. “Everyone is doing their best in their own corner. Some are doing it for survival, while others are focused on the real message and ministry.”
He emphasized that unlike more structured industries, Ghana’s gospel music space lacks coordinated mechanisms to guide and support artists collectively. As a result, musicians often work independently without strong institutional backing.
The artist further noted that the challenge is not limited to gospel music alone but reflects broader issues within the Ghana music industry. He argued that the absence of systems to unite and support creatives has made it difficult for musicians to thrive and sustain their craft.
“We call it an industry when there are proper systems and regulations in place, but that’s not really the case here,” he added. “To be honest, what we have now is a survival space.
